
Health Canada Releases Updated GMP Guide for Natural Health Products

On September 4, 2025, Health Canada unveiled Version 4.0 of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Guide for Natural Health Products, marking a significant update to the regulatory landscape. This new edition will officially come into force on March 4, 2026, with Version 3 remaining active during the transition period and still referenced by inspectors.
What’s New in Version 4.0?
While the core framework remains unchanged, Version 4.0 introduces more detailed guidance and elevated expectations across several key areas:
- A reorganized structure aligned with the Natural Health Product Regulations
- Stronger emphasis on comprehensive quality systems and leadership accountability
- Enhanced requirements for stability testing, CAPA plans, and recall procedures, including mock recalls
- Clearer directives for importers around testing, documentation, and label control
- Expanded rules for record keeping, including electronic systems, digital signatures, and bilingual documentation
- Refined guidance on reduced testing and input-based quantification, with stricter documentation standards
Transition Timeline
- Now through March 4, 2026: Companies should begin reviewing and updating their practices to align with the new guide
- After March 4, 2026: Version 3 will be retired, and Version 4 will become the sole reference
