HS Code Classification In Canada
January 28, 2026
The harmonized code system (HS) is an international classification system that was developed to simplify world trade with approximately 200 countries. The first six digits of the code are the same throughout the world which allows for the capture of international trade data. The remaining four digits are specific to the country the product will be imported to. The HS code assigned determines the amount of duty that will need to be paid when product crosses the border. Incorrect HS code assignment can lead to steep penalties to the importer on record.
The HS Code Classification is available at https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2026/html/tblmod-eng.html for further review. Food products are then classified under different chapters determined by theingredients and these chapters are listed on this page.
