Spotlight: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
June 17, 2026
Several federal acts and regulations govern the importation of food into Canada. Two key agencies play a central role:
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
- Global Affairs Canada (formerly DFAIT)
This month, we’re highlighting the CFIA, the primary federal body responsible for food safety and compliance at the border.
What the CFIA Does
CFIA delivers federal inspection services related to:
- Food safety
- Economic fraud prevention
- Traderelated requirements
- Animal and plant health
- Disease and pest control
To do this, the CFIA administers a wide range of legislation, including:
- Canada Agricultural Products Act
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency Act
- Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act
- Customs Act
- Export and Import Permits Act
- Fish Inspection Act
- Food and Drugs Act
- Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act
- Meat Inspection Act
- Plant Protection Act
- Weights and Measures Act
Why This Matters for US Suppliers
The Food and Drugs Act and Regulations is the core legislation governing all food sold in Canada (imported and domestic). It sets minimum health and safety standards and includes rules to prevent fraud or misleading practices in areas such as labelling, packaging, processing, and advertising.
Understanding the CFIA’s role helps US suppliers navigate Canadian requirements with confidence and avoid costly delays at the border.
